Proposed Ararimu Managed Fill – Have Your Say
A large managed-fill landfill is proposed at 1618 Ararimu Road. If approved, this facility would receive approximately 1.3 million cubic metres of fill material over a 16-year period. This scale of activity would significantly affect our rural community, with potential impacts on local roads, waterways, and the surrounding environment.
The proposed activity at 1618 Ararimu Road involves establishing a managed fill facility. Here’s what that entails for our community:
Scope of the Activity
-
The facility would occupy around 9.3 hectares of a 40.4-hectare site.
-
Filling activities could reach depths of 50–60 meters.
-
The site would accept soil, rock, and other construction-related materials, following a Fill Management Plan that regulates what materials can be brought in.
Operational Components
-
Earthworks: Large-scale earthmoving to shape and manage the landfill area.
-
Traffic: Increased truck movements delivering fill materials, likely using local rural roads.
-
Environmental controls: Measures for erosion, sediment management, dust suppression, and monitoring water quality.
-
Monitoring: Ongoing checks to ensure compliance with environmental standards and resource consent conditions.
Potential Impacts
-
Noise, dust, and traffic: Especially during active periods.
-
Water quality risk: If fill material or runoff is not managed properly.
-
Visual changes: The landscape will be significantly altered due to high-volume filling.
-
Long-term land use: After filling, the site may be used for industrial or other purposes, depending on planning approvals.
In short, the activity is essentially a large-scale, controlled earthfilling operation with regulatory oversight to manage environmental and safety risks, but it comes with community concerns over noise, traffic, and environmental impact.
