Oppose Ararimu Managed Fill

UPDATE – FEBRUARY 2026

Auckland Council has confirmed this afternoon that the applicant behind the proposed managed fill in Ararimu Rd has formally withdrawn their proposal.

So pleased for the immediate neighbours, but also for all our communities who would have endured up to 190 trucks a day / 6 days per week for 16 years.
Huge thanks to everyone who wrote a submission (522 of you!), supported fundraisers & donated to the campaign.

Ararimu R&R members have worked alongside HAPVRA on this. Thanks guys, you’re all legends!

Special thanks to our talented and diligent planning expert, Tammy Deans, who spent thousands of hours preparing the HAPVRA submission.

Now our full attention turns to the Jones Road, Hunua campaign. We haven’t forgotten you guys, far from it!

Funds:
We said at the outset any outstanding sums would be given to a community project. HAPVRA would now like to transfer all Ararimu Rd funds to the Hunua fighting fund. We don’t want any managed fills anywhere!!
If however, anyone does want a refund, please email: contact@Hapvra.nz or message us.

Proposed Ararimu Managed Fill – Have Your Say

A large managed-fill landfill is proposed at 1618 Ararimu Road. If approved, this facility would receive approximately 1.3 million cubic metres of fill material over a 16-year period. This scale of activity would significantly affect our rural community, with potential impacts on local roads, waterways, and the surrounding environment.

The proposed activity at 1618 Ararimu Road involves establishing a managed fill facility. Here’s what that entails for our community:

Scope of the Activity

  • The facility would occupy around 9.3 hectares of a 40.4-hectare site.

  • Filling activities could reach depths of 50–60 meters.

  • The site would accept soil, rock, and other construction-related materials, following a Fill Management Plan that regulates what materials can be brought in.

Operational Components

  • Earthworks: Large-scale earthmoving to shape and manage the landfill area.

  • Traffic: Increased truck movements delivering fill materials, likely using local rural roads.

  • Environmental controls: Measures for erosion, sediment management, dust suppression, and monitoring water quality.

  • Monitoring: Ongoing checks to ensure compliance with environmental standards and resource consent conditions.

Potential Impacts

  • Noise, dust, and traffic: Especially during active periods.

  • Water quality risk: If fill material or runoff is not managed properly.

  • Visual changes: The landscape will be significantly altered due to high-volume filling.

  • Long-term land use: After filling, the site may be used for industrial or other purposes, depending on planning approvals.

In short, the activity is essentially a large-scale, controlled earthfilling operation with regulatory oversight to manage environmental and safety risks, but it comes with community concerns over noise, traffic, and environmental impact.
